SQE1 Pass Rates by Sitting

The SRA publishes statistical reports after each SQE1 sitting. Pass rates are calculated separately for all candidates and first-time sitters, and broken down by FLK1 and FLK2.

January 2025

  • Overall pass rate: 56%
  • First-time sitters: 60%
  • FLK1 pass rate: 64%
  • FLK2 pass rate: 61%

July 2024

  • Overall pass rate: 44% (lowest ever)
  • First-time sitters: 48%
  • FLK1 pass rate: 55%
  • FLK2 pass rate: 50%

Historical Range (2021–2025)

  • Overall: 44% – 67%
  • FLK1: 55% – 67%
  • FLK2: 50% – 61%
  • FLK2 always lower than FLK1

Why FLK2 Has a Lower Pass Rate Than FLK1

In every SQE1 sitting since the assessment launched in 2021, FLK2 has had a lower pass rate than FLK1. FLK2 covers Property Practice, Wills and Administration of Estates, Solicitors Accounts, Land Law, Trusts, and Criminal Law — subjects that involve highly technical rules, precise calculations, and procedural detail that many candidates underestimate.

Solicitors Accounts in particular is consistently flagged as a weak area. Candidates who dedicate extra revision time to FLK2 subjects and practise applying the rules to client scenarios significantly improve their outcomes.

How to Beat the Pass Rate

1

Start Early

Candidates who begin 6+ months before their sitting consistently outperform those who cram. Spaced repetition requires time.

2

Prioritise FLK2

FLK2 has the lower pass rate. Dedicate proportionally more time to Property, Solicitors Accounts, and Criminal Procedure.

3

Practice Under Time Pressure

You have ~1.7 minutes per question. Regular timed practice is essential — accuracy under pressure is a skill that must be trained.

4

Analyse Your Performance

Use analytics to track which subjects you're scoring below 60% on, then target those areas specifically before your exam.

Frequently Asked Questions About SQE Pass Rates

What is the SQE1 pass rate?

SQE1 pass rates vary by sitting. In January 2025, the overall pass rate was 56% (60% for first-time sitters). In July 2024, it dropped to 44% — the lowest ever recorded. Historically, overall pass rates have ranged from 44% to 67% since the SQE launched in 2021.

What is the FLK1 pass rate compared to FLK2?

FLK1 consistently has a higher pass rate than FLK2 in every sitting since the SQE launched. In January 2025, FLK1 had a 64% pass rate and FLK2 had 61%. In July 2024, FLK1 was 55% and FLK2 was 50%. FLK2 covers more procedural and technical subjects which candidates typically find harder.

What percentage do you need to pass SQE1?

There is no fixed percentage pass mark for SQE1. The SRA sets a criterion-referenced pass mark for each sitting independently, based on the difficulty of that sitting's questions. Historically, candidates have needed approximately 56–65% correct answers to pass, but this varies per sitting.

Why did the SQE pass rate drop in July 2024?

The July 2024 sitting recorded the lowest ever overall SQE1 pass rate of 44%. The SRA has noted that pass rates vary depending on the cohort of candidates and the difficulty of the questions set. Research also shows a persistent diversity gap in candidate performance, with some demographic groups consistently passing at lower rates.

How can I improve my chances of passing SQE1?

Candidates who pass tend to combine structured revision across all 13 subjects, daily practice MCQs, full mock exams under timed conditions, and performance analytics to target weak areas. Starting preparation at least 6 months before your exam date significantly improves outcomes.
